In the sleepy town of iron ore, Texas, a drifter named Harry Madox (Johnson) rolls into town and takes a job as a used car salesman. Harry's charm quickly draws him into a torrid affair with Dolly Harshaw (Madsen), the wife of the dealership's owner. Unbeknownst to Harry, Dolly has a hidden agenda, and their relationship becomes a dangerous game of cat and mouse. Meanwhile, Harry develops an interest in Gloria Harper (Connelly), who works at the car dealership in the loan office. As their relationship blossoms, Harry learns that the staff of the local bank are all volunteer firemen and that the cameras in the bank do not work. Opportunities arise, and Harry decides to rob the bank. His plan takes an unexpected turn when he saves a homeless man trapped in a burning building across the street, leading the sheriff to suspect him of committing the crime. Dolly gives him an alibi but tells him she will sell him out unless he kills her husband—whom she married for his money—and Gloria is blackmailed by Frank Sutton over some nude photos he took of her and her friend. Harry confronts Sutton but ends up killing him in a struggle, planting evidence to divert suspicion away from himself, and disposing of the shoes believed to belong to Gloria; he then tells police that Sutton had recently paid cash for a new car making it seem like he had robbed the bank and receives a reward for providing the tip that helps the police "solve" the robbery. However, things are complicated when Dolly reveals that she has a letter that will implicate him in the crime, and Gloria learns about her affair with Harry. In a twist of events, it is revealed that it was Dolly who was having an affair with Sutton; Dolly offers not to go to police and allows Gloria keeps her job at car dealership to pay back money she stole. A heartbroken Gloria leaves Harry while Harry resigns himself; with Dolly leaving town together. In this neo-noir crime thriller film, The Hot Spot, a drifter's arrival in a sleepy Texas town sets off a chain of deception, love affairs, blackmail schemes, murder, robberies, twists, and turns as he tries to survive his way through a tense and complicated web of crime and romance filled with dangerous and appealing women and double-crossing, leading down an unpredictable path.
