In 16th-century India, two best friends, Tara and Maya, navigate the complexities of love, betrayal, and sexuality. Tara, a princess, and Maya, her beautiful servant, have grown up together, but their friendship is tested when Tara marries Prince Raj Singh and Maya takes revenge by seducing him. The two women's lives take different paths, with Tara enduring a violent and loveless marriage, while Maya learns the art of the Kama Sutra and becomes the king's new courtesan. Meanwhile, Jai Kumar, a young stone sculptor, enters Maya's life and the two share a passionate romance. As tensions rise between Raj and Jai, Maya and Jai exchange wedding vows in secret. But when Raj catches them together, he sentences Jai to death. In the end, Maya reconciles with Tara and teaches her how to seduce the king in a desperate attempt to save Jai's life.
