The First Great Train Robbery is a thrilling heist film set in Victorian England. Master thief Edward Pierce (Sean Connery) and his crew, including pickpocket Robert Agar (Donald Sutherland) and Pierce's mistress Miriam (Lesley-Anne Down), plan to steal a shipment of gold from a moving train. The gold is heavily guarded in two safes, requiring four keys to open. Pierce recruits train guard Burgess (George Downing) and bribes bank executives Henry Fowler and Edgar Trent for their keys. The team successfully breaks into Trent's home and makes a wax impression of his key, but the keys at the train station prove more challenging. They stage a phony police raid to distract Fowler and steal his key, but the keys at the station require a daring nighttime heist. The operation is compromised when Clean Willy, a cat burglar they recruited to help, is arrested and informs on Pierce. The police set a trap for Pierce, but he eludes capture. With their plan in jeopardy, the team must adapt and overcome the increased security measures to pull off the ultimate heist.
