...given a larger budget and huge sets, the team has come up with a worthy successor in this more expansive though no less weird picture.

...with its fine performances, gorgeous sets, incredible special effects, imaginative story line, beautiful score, and knockout cinematography, The City of Lost Children is very much worth seeing.

In a dark, misty city by the sea, a group of orphans are kidnapped by a cyborg cult called the Cyclops and taken to an abandoned oil rig where a mad scientist named Krank resides. Krank, who is unable to dream and ages prematurely as a result, steals the children's dreams using a machine in order to reverse his aging process. One, a strongman from a nearby carnival, sets out to rescue his adopted little brother Denrée who was kidnapped by the Cyclops. Along the way, he teams up with Miette, one of the orphans who was also kidnapped and escape from their headquarters after being sentenced to execution. They encounter various strange characters including Marcello, a circus performer who uses trained fleas to control people's minds; an amnesiac diver living beneath the harbor; and Irvin, a brain in a vat who helps One and Miette decipher Krank's plans. As they journey deeper into Krank's lair on the oil rig they face dangerous obstacles leading up to ship crashing into pier before One can throttle Miette at which point Marcello arrives setting off spectacular chain reactions allowing them all escape alive but not before discovering that their adventure has been triggered by nothing more than little girl's tear falling onto plea for help bottled inside dream that ultimately helped save her life . A surreal fantasy adventure film which explores themes such as childhood trauma , loneliness ,and desire for power through symbolism & visual storytelling., "The City Of Lost Children" is both hauntingly beautiful work art that will leave viewers spellbound until very end when all questions are answered at last minute reveal - even if it may still leave some viewers wondering what happened during certain parts!
