Frequently Asked Questions

What is Land and Freedom about? Toggle content

In 1936, David Carr, a young communist from Liverpool, joins the Republican forces in the Spanish Civil War to fight against fascism. He leaves behind his granddaughter Kim and travels to Spain, where he experiences the horrors of war and becomes disillusioned with the political ideologies that divide the left-wing forces. The film follows David's journey from idealism to disillusionment, as he witnesses the betrayal of the Spanish revolution by Stalin's followers and the internal conflicts within the left-wing forces. Meanwhile, he falls in love with a Spanish woman named Blanca and forms friendships with other foreign volunteers. The film is a powerful portrayal of the human cost of war and political ideologies gone wrong.
