L'immensità

L'immensità is a 2022 Italian drama film directed by Emanuele Crialese. The film is set in Rome in the 1970s and follows the story of a family struggling with the changing times and their own personal demons. The film's title, L'immensità, translates to "The Immensity" in English. The film centers around Clara, a Spanish expatriate living in Rome with her husband Felice and their three children. Clara is a nonconformist who feels trapped in her loveless marriage to Felice, who is unfaithful and abusive. Their eldest child, Adriana, experiences gender dysphoria and identifies as a boy, going by the name Andrea. As Andrea grows closer to Sara, a Romani girl who knows him as a boy, tensions within the family begin to rise. Clara finds solace in her relationship with her children, particularly Andrea, while struggling to come to terms with her own identity and the changing world around her. L'immensità explores themes of identity, family dynamics, gender roles, and cultural upheaval during a time of great social change in Italy. The film features stunning visuals and powerful performances from its cast, including Penélope Cruz as Clara. It premiered at the Venice Film Festival in September 2022.
