It's a complex performance made effortless, as if those long-winded lines were born on his lips, not rehearsed from a well-thumbed Arden.

Pacino is a fascinating actor. As he has grown older he has grown more fierce. He is charged sometimes with overacting, but never with bad acting...

What is The Merchant of Venice about? Toggle content

In 16th century Venice, a young man named Bassanio desires to woo the beautiful and wealthy Portia, but lacks the financial means to do so. He turns to his friend Antonio, a merchant, for a loan, but Antonio's assets are tied up in his business and he is unable to provide the necessary funds. Bassanio and Antonio then seek the help of the moneylender Shylock, who agrees to lend them the money but demands a gruesome payment in return: a pound of Antonio's flesh if the loan is not repaid on time. Despite the risky terms, Bassanio and Antonio agree to the deal, and Bassanio heads to Belmont to win Portia's hand. However, when Antonio's ships are lost at sea and he is unable to repay the loan, Shylock demands his pound of flesh and takes Antonio to court. With the help of Portia, who disguises herself as a lawyer and uses her knowledge of Venetian law to outsmart Shylock, Bassanio is able to save Antonio's life and they both return to Belmont where they are married to Portia and her handmaid Nerissa respectively. The movie features an all-star cast, including Al Pacino as Shylock, Jeremy Irons as Antonio, Joseph Fiennes as Bassanio, Lynn Collins as Portia, and Zuleikha Robinson as Jessica. It was directed by Michael Radford and released in 2004. The film's unique and compelling storyline, combined with its high-quality production and performances, make it a must-see for fans of Shakespearean drama and historical movies alike.
