In 1800s Japan, women had few options when it came to escaping abusive relationships. But for those who knew where to look, there was hope. Kakekomi tells the story of several strong-willed women who find refuge in Tokeiji, a monastery in Kamakura that offers them a chance to divorce their husbands and start anew. With the help of the temple's nuns, these women discover a sense of community and strength they never knew they had. But as they work towards a brighter future for themselves, they must confront the societal norms that have held them back for so long. Will they find the courage to break free from their past and forge their own paths?
