...for all its anything-goes devilry, the film sticks with you. The images do strike a terrifying chord, the feverish answer driving you back through the dizzy paths of the movie to assemble its purpose.

Creepy, well-acted and my first exposure to this sort of tale. Consider reading 'Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge' as a companion piece but, as far as I remember, this film is more of a "Is he?-Isn't he?" variation. Keeping ...

What is Jacob's Ladder about? Toggle content

Jacob's Ladder is a psychological horror film that follows the story of Jacob Singer, a Vietnam War veteran who is struggling to maintain his sanity after returning home. The film explores the theme of PTSD and the effects it has on soldiers who have experienced traumatic events during their time in combat. The movie begins with Jacob experiencing strange and terrifying hallucinations, including visions of demons and monsters, as well as flashbacks to his time in Vietnam. He tries to seek help from his girlfriend Jezebel and his chiropractor friend Louis, but they are unable to reach him as he descends into madness. As the film progresses, we learn that Jacob's platoon mates are also experiencing similar hallucinations and they begin to investigate whether they were subjects of a military experiment while serving in Vietnam. The men in black suits try to intimidate Jacob and silence him from seeking the truth. The film takes a twist when Jacob is abducted by these men and taken to a nightmarish hospital where he is told that he has been killed and this is his afterlife. However, Louis comes to his rescue just in time before he disappears into nothingness forever. As Jacob tries to make sense of all that has happened, Louis quotes Meister Eckhart: "In this darkness there is light." The final shot shows an angel (Michael) carrying away an unconscious body whilecementingthe idea that what we see might not be entirely trustworthy; instead everything may simply be part of yet another hallucination or vision conjured up by someone still trapped inside their own mind—perhaps even one plagued with guilt over past decisions made during wartime.) This open ending suggests not only do our experiences shape us but so do our perceptions—and sometimes those perceptions can become distorted by external stimuli or internal fears alike
