In the not-too-distant future, a global catastrophe has wiped out nearly all of humanity on Earth. The remaining survivors on Earth are infertile, and a group of astronauts from a space colony called Kepler-209 return to Earth to test whether it is suitable for human habitation and reproduction. The mission is led by Louise Blake, who discovers that she is fertile and must decide the fate of the planet's remaining inhabitants. She must choose between saving her own people or preserving the life of the Muds, a group of fertile humans who have been living on Earth. As Blake navigates this dangerous new world, she uncovers secrets about her father's past and the true intentions of her fellow astronauts. In the end, Blake must make a decision that will seal the fate of both planets and determine the future of humanity.
