Defendor (2009) is a Canadian superhero comedy-drama film directed by Peter Stebbings. The movie follows the story of Arthur Poppington (played by Woody Harrelson), a regular man who decides to become a vigilante superhero, dubbed Defendor, to fight against crime and protect the innocent citizens of his city. Arthur's motivation to become Defendor stems from his belief that his mother's death from a drug overdose was caused by her association with a notorious criminal, Captain Industry. He also blames Captain Industry for his father's disappearance. Convinced that he is doing the right thing, Arthur uses his wit and homemade gadgets to take on the criminal underworld. The film also stars Kat Dennings as Katerina "Kat" Debrofkowitz / Angel), a young prostitute who becomes Arthur's partner in crime-fighting and eventually becomes romantically involved with him. Sandra Oh plays Dr. Park, Arthur's psychiatrist, who listens to Arthur's story and tries to understand his motivations. The cast also includes Elias Koteas as Chuck Dooney, a corrupt police detective; Michael Kelly as Paul Carter, Arthur's friend and co-worker; Lisa Ray as Dominique Ball, a social worker who helps Arthur; and Graham Abbey as Constable Mike, a police officer who offers Arthur help. The film explores themes of trauma, mental health, morality, and redemption.
