There are some good things in the movie. Some scenes play well as self-contained episodes. The city of Portland is beautifully evoked. Jane Alexander and Morgan Freeman make a couple we love. Greg Kinnear raises fecklessness to an art.

Veteran screenwriter and director Robert Benton centers his romantic, nudity-filled drama on a college-town coffee shop where the lead characters converge over steaming cups of java.

What is Feast of Love about? Toggle content

Feast of Love is a movie that explores the intricacies of love and its various forms in the lives of a group of friends living in Oregon. The film takes the viewer on a journey through the ups and downs of love, relationships, heartbreaks, and new beginnings. The story revolves around Harry Stevenson (Morgan Freeman), a local community college professor, who provides narration throughout the film about the power and complexity of love. Harry has been married for a long time, but he and his wife Esther (Jane Alexander) are struggling to deal with their own grief after the death of their adult son Aaron (Toby Hemingway). They find solace in their friendship with Chloe Barlow (Alexa Davalos), a young woman who works at the local cafe run by Bradley Smith (Greg Kinnear). Bradley is going through his own personal struggles as he tries to come to terms with his failing marriage to Kathryn (Selma Blair) who has fallen in love with Jenny (Stana Katic), a woman she met while playing softball. After their divorce, Bradley finds love again with Diana Croce (Radha Mitchell), a real estate agent who has a history with David Watson (Billy Burke), a married man. However, their love too is short-lived as Diana eventually leaves Bradley for David. Meanwhile, Oscar Gamlen (Toby Hemingway) falls in love at first sight with Chloe, who predictably reveals that a fortune teller has told her that Oscar will die young. Despite this, they marry and Chloe becomes pregnant, but their happiness is short-lived as Oscar collapses and dies of a heart defect while playing football during an afternoon in the park. Bat Gamlen's attempt to harm Chloe is foiled by Harry, and instead, Harry asks Chloe if she will let Esther and him adopt her as their own daughter. She tearfully agrees to this new family relationship while inviting the community to join in the celebration following the birth of her child. By the end of Feast Of Love's touching storyline, we see that despite the ups and downs of life and relationships people are destined to be together, both in sorrow and joy.
