In a dystopian future, all women have vanished from a planet inhabited by men who are afflicted with a condition called the Noise, which causes their thoughts to be heard and seen by others. Todd Hewitt, a young man who has grown up in this world, discovers Viola Eade, a mysterious girl who has crash-landed on the planet. Despite the danger posed by Prentiss, the mayor of Todd's town, and his men who want to exploit Viola's knowledge for their own gain, Todd vows to protect her and help her escape. As they flee through dangerous terrain and encounter hostile creatures known as Spackle, Todd must confront his own fears and learn to control his Noise in order to keep Viola safe. Along the way, they discover hidden secrets about their world that could change everything they thought they knew about their reality.
