The Zookeeper's Wife

The Zookeeper's Wife tells the true story of Jan and Antonina Zabinski, who risked everything to save hundreds of people and animals during the Nazi invasion of Poland. As the director of the Warsaw Zoo, Jan was away when the bombardment began, leaving Antonina and their son to barely survive. The zoo's prized animals were killed by Dr. Lutz Heck, Hitler's chief zoologist, who later returned to shoot the remaining animals. The Zabinskis used their zoo to hide Jews and resistance fighters, working with the Underground Army to smuggle people out of the Ghetto. They also hid people in their home, including a young girl who had been raped by German soldiers. As Germans began transporting Jews to death camps, Jan tried to convince Janusz Korczak, head of a Jewish children's orphanage, to escape with him but was unsuccessful. Heck became increasingly infatuated with Antonina as he visited her at home despite her attempts to keep him at bay while hiding Jews in secret passages beneath their villa; he even pins a Nazi cross on Ryszard's shirt before leaving angrily after failing get information about his parents from him when visiting unexpectedly one day during his birthday celebrations (the same night that Passover would begin). In January 1945—around 6 years after Germany invaded Poland—the evacuation begins; desperate for news about her husband (whom everyone believes has already died), Antonina seeks help from Dr Lutz Heck once again only this time so that she might find out whether or not Jan really did die amidst all these rumors floating around town lately...
