National Lampoon's Vacation follows the Griswold family as they embark on a disastrous road trip from Chicago to California's Walley World theme park. Clark, the well-meaning but bumbling family patriarch, insists on driving the family in their new station wagon, which turns out to be an oversized, ugly vehicle. Along the way, they encounter numerous mishaps, including vandalism, a confrontation with a bartender, and a series of encounters with a beautiful woman in a red Ferrari. They also take on unexpected passengers, including Ellen's cranky Aunt Edna and her mean dog Dinky. As they make their way across the country, they face one obstacle after another, leading to a series of hilarious misadventures.
