På trods af en bagage med Aspergers syndrom, en opvækst i et nordengelsk arbejdermiljø, præget af mobning og en familie uden særlige musikalske evner, er det lykkedes for ham at blive en sin generations bedste til at improvisere på klaver og orgel. Han har absolut gehør hvilket kun én ud af 10.000 har, og allerede som 3 årig kunne han spille de melodier, han hørte i radioen.Det er historien om Den Grimme Ælling, som mentalt forslået lander i Herning, hvor han kommer under dirigent Mads Billes vinger, og langsomt folder sig ud som en smuk svane og helstøbt musiker. Når Kristian Marius Andersen spiller er han urørlig, men når han træder ud af musikkens tryllekreds rammer hverdagens krav ham som en hammer. Instruktør Anne Moulvad har igennem fem år fulgt Kristians slalom mellem kunstneriske højdepunkter og det udmarvende og kaotiske møde med dagligdagens trivielle gåder.

Tangentspilleren is a documentary film that tells the remarkable story of Kristian Marius Andersen, a virtuosic organist with Asperger's syndrome. Despite his condition and a difficult upbringing, Kristian has managed to become one of the best improvisers on piano and organ of his generation. With an absolute ear for music, he was able to play melodies he heard on the radio at the age of three. The film follows Kristian's journey as he comes under the wing of director Mads Bille and slowly unfolds as a beautiful swan and talented musician. When Kristian plays, he is unstoppable, but when he steps out of the magic circle of music, everyday life hits him like a hammer.
