The film takes place in 17th century Japan, where two Portuguese Jesuit priests named Sebastião Rodrigues and Francisco Garupe travel to find their mentor Cristóvão Ferreira, who is believed to have apostatized under torture during a period of intense persecution of Christians. Along their journey, they witness the brutal treatment of Christians and are forced to confront their own faith and morality. Silence stars Andrew Garfield, Adam Driver, Tadanobu Asano Liam Neeson, Shinya Tsukamoto, Issey Ogata , Yōsuke Kubozuka , Nana Komatsu, Ryo Kase, Katsuo Nakamura, Yoshi Oida, Béla Baptiste . It was released in 2016 and premiered at the Vatican City. Silence received generally positive reviews from critics and was nominated for several awards including an Academy Award nomination for Best Cinematography.
