It plays, rather cunningly, more as a mystery than an out-an-out war movie.

What is The Eagle Has Landed about? Toggle content

In the midst of World War II, Hitler and his high command concoct a daring plan to kidnap Winston Churchill and extract him to Germany for negotiations. The operation, codenamed "Eagle," is led by decorated Fallschirmjäger officer Kurt Steiner and his team of paratroopers disguised as Polish soldiers. However, their mission is complicated when they're discovered by villagers in the English countryside where Churchill is residing. A tense standoff ensues as the Germans hold the villagers hostage in a church while they await Churchill's arrival. But just as it seems they'll succeed, American Rangers launch a surprise attack that ultimately foils the operation. Steiner and his men make the ultimate sacrifice to save Devlin, while Molly Prior, a local girl who has fallen for Devlin, helps them escape. The mission ends in tragedy, but not before Steiner makes a final attempt to take out Churchill.
