Tom Ford’s second feature is a handsomely crafted affair, designed to within an inch of its life to combine crystal-clear vision with eye-catching style.

...a piece of junk culture with an unapologetic pulp filling, masterfully formed by Ford and expertly framed by cinematographer Seamus McGarvey.

What is Nocturnal Animals about? Toggle content

Nocturnal Animals is a 2016 American psychological thriller film directed by Tom Ford. The film tells the story of Susan Morrow, a wealthy art gallery owner who is struggling with her current life and marriage. One day, she receives a package from her ex-husband, Edward, which contains his newly written novel. As she reads the book, she becomes drawn into its violent and dark storyline, which forces her to confront painful memories from their past relationship. The film explores themes of love, cruelty, revenge, and redemption through Susan's journey as she delves deeper into the novel's disturbing narrative. The story within the novel follows Tony Hastings, a mathematics professor whose family vacation turns violent when they are targeted by another vehicle on a deserted Texas road at night. As Susan becomes more engrossed in the book, she begins to see parallels between Tony's story and her own life with Edward. The film raises questions about the nature of relationships and how people can hurt those they love. Through Susan's reflections on her past and present circumstances - both within and outside marriage - Nocturnal Animals probes our collective psyche while keeping viewers gripped until its final scenes unfold irreversibly before them!
