Frequently Asked Questions
What is Mississippi Burning about?
In 1964, three civil rights workers go missing in Jessup County, Mississippi. FBI agents Alan Ward and Rupert Anderson are sent to investigate, but their approaches clash. Ward is by-the-book, while Anderson is more nuanced. They face resistance from the local sheriff and Klan members. Anderson's wife reveals the missing men were murdered and buried in an earthen dam. The agents have a physical fight, and Ward concedes defeat, giving Anderson carte blanche. Anderson devises a plan to indict Klan members for civil rights violations. They kidnap the mayor, leaving him with a black man who threatens to castrate him unless he speaks out. The mayor gives a full description of the killings, but the obtained information is inadmissible in court due to coercion. Anderson and Ward concoct a plan to lure Klan collaborators to a bogus meeting. They concentrate on Lester Cowens, a nervous Klansman. The Feds pick him up and interrogate him. Cowens believing his redneck brothers have threatened his life because of his admissions to the FBI finally incriminates his accomplices and the Klansmen are all charged with civil rights violations.
