In 19th-century Russia, a neurotic scholar named Boris Grushenko is forced to enlist in the army during the Napoleonic Wars. Despite his cowardice, Boris inadvertently becomes a war hero and returns home to marry his cousin Sonja, who has her own plans for their future together. However, their life is disrupted when Napoleon invades Russia, and Sonja conceives a plot to assassinate him. Boris reluctantly goes along with the plan, but they ultimately fail and Boris is executed. In the end, Boris' ghost bids farewell to Sonja and the audience before dancing away with Death.
