Werner Herzog and Klaus Kinski worked together many times, but rarely - if ever - to better effect than in this tale of a South American opera fan.

The movie is imperfect, but transcendent; this story could not have been filmed on this location in this way and been perfect without being less of a film.

In the early 20th century, Brian Sweeney Fitzgerald, an Irishman with a passion for opera, dreams of building an opera house in the heart of the Amazon rainforest. Despite his determination, he lacks the capital to make his dream a reality. When he learns of an unclaimed parcel of land containing rubber trees, he sees an opportunity to fund his project. However, the parcel is located on the other side of a treacherous section of rapids, and the only way to access it is by pulling a 320-ton steamship up a 40° hillside. Undeterred, Fitzcarraldo recruits a crew and embarks on the perilous journey, facing hostile indigenous tribes and overcoming seemingly insurmountable obstacles along the way. After months of struggle, they successfully pull the ship over the mountain, but Fitzcarraldo is forced to abandon his quest when the ship is swept away by the rapids. Despondent but not defeated, Fitzcarraldo sells the steamship back to its previous owner and uses the proceeds to bring a European opera company to Iquitos. With no opera house to perform in, the company sets up their sets on the deck of the ship and performs for the entire city. In the end, Fitzcarraldo's unwavering dedication brings opera to Iquitos, fulfilling his dream in a way he never could have imagined.
