Exciting, ironic, with assured direction, accomplished performances and the tension of topical themes, this is Shakespeare as relevant as you like it.

Fiennes has exercised commendable restraint, allowing others to shine too. He can congratulate himself that his first film as a director is a fine achievement.

Fiennes’ Coriolanus is brutal and bleak, cynical about politics, wary of war, and unable to offer alternatives to either.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Coriolanus about? Toggle content

Coriolanus is a movie that tells the story of a brilliant Roman general named Caius Martius (Ralph Fiennes), who is both admired and resented by the people of Rome. After a successful military campaign against the Volscian army led by Tullus Aufidius (Gerard Butler), Martius returns to Rome and is given the agnomen "Coriolanus." Encouraged by his mother Volumnia (Vanessa Redgrave), Coriolanus runs for consul within the Roman Senate and wins, but his arrogance and contempt for the commoners lead to his downfall when he openly attacks the concept of popular rule during a riot caused by two tribunes, Brutus and Sicinius (Tony Curran and Brian Cox). Coriolanus is banished from Rome, and in his anger and desire for revenge, he seeks out Aufidius in the Volscian capital of Antium and offers to let him kill him. Moved by Coriolanus's plight and honored to fight alongside the great general, Aufidius and his superiors embrace Coriolanus and allow him to lead a new assault on Rome. As Coriolanus and Aufidius lead a Volscian attack on Rome, panicked Roman leaders send General Titus (Ron Cook) and Senator Menenius (Alan Cumming) to try to persuade Coriolanus to halt his crusade for vengeance. When they fail, Volumnia is sent to meet with her son along with Virgilia (Jessica Chastain), where she succeeds in dissuading him from destroying Rome. The movie concludes with Aufidius and Coriolanus making peace between the Romansand the Volscians, only for Aufidius to confront Coriolanus again and kill him for his betrayal.
