Frequently Asked Questions

What is Alatriste about? Toggle content

In 17th century Spain, the brave and heroic soldier Diego Alatriste fought in the Flandes region for his King's army. After his friend's death, Alatriste promised to take care of his son and refused to teach him how to fight. Returning to Madrid, Alatriste found a declining kingdom and became a mercenary. He was hired to kill the Prince of Wales and his companion, but the job was complicated by the involvement of the king's lover. Alatriste had a romance with an actress and crossed swords with a friend of the king. The film's spectacular ending included a duel with his friend and the punishment of his son in the galleys. The last scenes were at the Battle of Rocroi, where Alatriste likely died. The movie took inspiration from all five books published before its premiere, maintaining the same storyline for the main characters while including excerpts from future books in the saga.
