The Witchfinder General is a historical horror film set in 17th-century England during the tumultuous English Civil War. Sara is raped by Stearne, and Marshall returns to the village seeking revenge. The film's climax takes place in the village of Lavenham, where Hopkins and Stearne have set a trap for Marshall and Sara. Marshall watches as needles are repeatedly jabbed into Sara's back, but he refuses to confess to witchcraft and breaks free from his bonds. He grabs an axe and repeatedly strikes Hopkins, and the soldiers enter the room, horrified by what they see. One of them, Trooper Swallow puts the mutilated but living Hopkins out of his misery by shooting him dead. The film ends with Marshall's mind snapping, and Sara on the brink of insanity screaming uncontrollably.
