Tora! Tora! Tora! is a historical war drama film that recounts the events leading up to the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese on December 7, 1941, which ultimately led to the United States' entry into World War II. The film details the preparations and decisions made by both the American and Japanese militaries in the days leading up to the attack. The film opens with the United States imposing a trade embargo on Japan in August 1939 due to their aggressive actions in Asia, which severely limits Japan's access to raw materials necessary for their military expansion. In response, influential Japanese army figures and politicians push through an alliance with Germany and Italy in September 1940, despite opposition from the Japanese navy. As tensions between the two nations continue to escalate, Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto becomes the Commander-in-Chief of the Japanese Combined Fleet and reluctantly plans a pre-emptive strike on the U.S. Pacific Fleet anchored at Pearl Harbor, believing that it is Japan's best hope of controlling the Pacific Ocean. Air Staff Officer Minoru Genda is chosen to mastermind the operation, while his old Naval Academy classmate Mitsuo Fuchida is selected to lead the attack. Meanwhile, in Washington, U.S. military intelligence has broken the Japanese Purple Code, allowing them to intercept secret Japanese radio transmissions indicating increased Japanese naval activity. Monitoring these transmissions are U.S. Army Col. Bratton and U.S. Navy Lt. Commander Kramer who warn their superiors about the impending attack. At Pearl Harbor itself, Admiral Kimmel increases defensive naval and air patrols around Hawaii which could provide early warning of enemy presence while General Short recommends concentrating aircraft at their base on the runways as a deterrent against sabotage by enemy agents in Hawaii. However, General Howard Davidson tries dispersing some of these planes onto other airfields on Oahu but is met with resistance from other military officials who believe the threat of an attack from Japan is highly unlikely. The film concludes with the dawn of December 7, 1941, as Japanese planes arrive undetected and launch a surprise attack against Pearl harbor killing over 2,400 Americans and destroying much of the American Pacific Fleet along with several airfields such as Ford Island, Wheeler Field, and Hickam Field.. The attack ultimately leads President Franklin D. Roosevelt declaring war against Japan leading to America's entry into World War II.
