What is The Sower about? Toggle content

In 1852, a small mountain village in Provence is left without men after Napoleon III's repression. The women, desperate to see their men again, make a pact to share any man who comes to the village. When a mysterious blacksmith named Jean arrives, he becomes the object of desire for the women. Violette, the young woman chosen to look after him, becomes his lover and tries to convince him to stay and help the women with the harvest. As the other women pressure Violette to share Jean, he reveals that he is in hiding and must leave France. Despite this, Jean and Violette continue their relationship, and Violette becomes pregnant. As some of the men return home after two years, the women fear their judgment and decide that Jean must leave. Violette initially intends to go with him, but Jean departs unannounced, leaving her a letter and promising to write once he is settled. "The Sower" is a sensual and visually stunning historical romance that explores themes of love, survival, and community.
