A young man, Jim Halsey, on a mission to deliver a car from Chicago to San Diego, encounters a mysterious hitchhiker named John Ryder in the middle of a deserted road. Ryder forces himself into Jim's car and reveals his psychopathic nature by threatening him with a switchblade. Jim manages to shove Ryder out of the moving car, but the nightmare doesn't end there. Ryder continues to stalk and terrorize Jim, leaving a trail of murdered innocent people in his wake. The police mistakenly believe Jim is the killer and chase him down, while Ryder persistently hunts him, determined to make him his next victim. As the cat-and-mouse game intensifies, Jim finds temporary refuge with Nash, a kind-hearted waitress who takes pity on him. However, Ryder eventually catches up with them and kidnaps Nash.
