Frequently Asked Questions

What is The Forgiven about? Toggle content

"The Forgiven" is a powerful and thought-provoking drama that follows the story of Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who is tasked with heading the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in post-Apartheid South Africa. As he works to uncover the truth behind the brutal murders committed during this time, he meets with a former security police officer and Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging member, Piet Blomfeld, who is seeking amnesty for his crimes. Through their meetings, Blomfeld initially shows no remorse and instead uses his time to berate the Archbishop with insults. However, as the Archbishop continues to push for the truth, Blomfeld begins to reconsider his actions and ultimately decides to confess. But just as he is about to reveal the truth, he is brutally beaten to death by riot troopers. Despite this tragic turn of events, the film ends on a note of hope and forgiveness as Mrs. Morobe confronts one of the participants in her daughter's murder and forgives him. The movie concludes with the Archbishop visiting a beach he went to as a child, now successfully integrated - a symbol of hope and reconciliation in a country that was once torn apart by Apartheid.
