Southern Comfort is a thriller movie that tells the story of a group of National Guardsmen who go on a weekend exercise in the Louisiana bayou and find themselves in a desperate fight for survival against a group of violent Cajuns. The movie starts with the squad, led by Staff Sergeant Poole, patrolling the remote swampland and coming across an abandoned campsite with several canoe-type boats called pirogues. The soldiers need the pirogues to get across the flooded swamp, but their attempt to take them is met with hostility by the Cajun hunters who own them. The situation quickly escalates when one of the soldiers, PFC Stuckey, fires blanks from his machine gun at the Cajuns, thinking it's amusing. The Cajuns return fire with live ammunition, killing Poole and sending the squad into a panic. The surviving soldiers are forced to retreat and defend themselves against further attacks by their vengeful enemies while struggling to cope with their new environment filled with dangerous wildlife such as snakes and alligators; diseases like malaria or hypothermia due to exposure; treacherous terrain including quicksand bogs; unpredictable weather conditions like hurricanes or lightning storms; deteriorating morale as they realize no help will arrive anytime soon during this chaos around them created mainly by human factors rather than natural occurrences which makes it harder for our protagonists not only stay alive but also maintain some kind of sanity amidst all these adverse circumstances since everything seems conspired against them!
