In 16th century France, the beautiful and intelligent Marie de Mézières is forced to marry the Prince of Montpensier to elevate her family's status, despite her passion for her cousin, Henri de Guise. As religious tensions between Catholics and Protestants escalate, Marie finds herself trapped in a web of intrigue and desire, torn between her duty to her husband and her love for Henri. When the prince returns to the royal court, Marie is left in the care of the disillusioned Count of Chabannes, who becomes her tutor and confidant. As they grow closer, Chabannes imprudently confesses his love to Marie, who values their friendship but cannot reciprocate his feelings.
