...it looks like a blandly touching movie about a lonely old man who befriends a scrappy kid and learns about the magic of storytelling.

Mr. Holmes is a 2015 drama-crime film directed by Bill Condon and starring Ian McKellen as the iconic detective Sherlock Holmes. The movie takes place in 1947, where a retired and aging Holmes lives in a remote farmhouse with his housekeeper Mrs. Munro (Laura Linney) and her son Roger (Milo Parker). As Holmes struggles with his deteriorating memory, he becomes obsessed with an unsolved case from his past that he could never crack. Despite the absence of his trusted sidekick Dr. John Watson, Holmes enlists Roger's help in solving the case, which involves a young woman who was estranged from her husband after two miscarriages. Through flashbacks, we see how Holmes originally took on the case and followed Ann Kelmot (Hattie Morahan) around London as she seemed to be preparing to murder her husband. However, he soon discovers that Ann's true intentions were far more complex and tragic than he initially thought. As Holmes works to solve the case once again, he grapples with feelings of loneliness and isolation while also developing a paternal bond with Roger. The movie also features Hiroyuki Sanada as Tamiki Umezaki, an admirer of Holmes who confronts him about a personal matter from their past days in Japan; Patrick Kennedy as Thomas Kelmot; Roger Allam as Dr. Barrie; Phil Davis as Inspector Gilbert; Frances de la Tour as Madame Schirmer; Colin Starkey as Dr John Watson: Nicholas Rowe as "Matinee Sherlock": Frances Barbera s "Matinee Madame Schirmer"; John Sessions s Mycroft Homes: Sarah Crowden s Mrs Hudson : Hermione Corfield s Matinee 'Ann Kelmot'; Kit Connor s The boy'.
