Silly, gory but great-looking and fun martial arts fantasy.

For the first time really, the truly gruesome appeal of “Mortal Kombat” makes it to the big screen...

Fans of the franchise will be glad to know the movie earns its American R rating too — when the fatalities come, they are brutal and bloody.

Real good fight movie. Let’s be clear, it’s not the new Spider-Man or Batman, but it makes for a fine action movie - Without a doubt the best attempt for a Mortal Combat movie.

Really hope they do a sequel!

In the movie Mortal Kombat, Earthrealm is threatened by Outworld, led by Emperor Shang Tsung. Outworld has won nine tournaments known as 'Mortal Kombat, and if they win a tenth, they will conquer Earthrealm. However, an ancient prophecy states that a new generation of Earthrealm champions, marked by the blood of Hanzo Hasashi will unite to prevent Outworld's victory. Shang Tsung sends his warriors to kill Earthrealm's champions marked with a dragon sign. MMA fighter Cole Young is one such champion. Cole, his family, and Special Forces Major Jax Briggs are attacked by Bi-Han (Sub-Zero). Jax stays to battle Sub-Zero but loses his arms. Cole goes to Sonya Blade's hideout; they meet Raiden, who protects them from Shang Tsung's attack. Cole, Kano and the other champions train to unlock their Arcana powers. Meanwhile, Shang Tsung's assassin Syzoth attacks them; Kano kills him with help from Cole and Sonya. Raiden shields the temple from Shang Tsung's attack, but Liu Kang and Kung Lao are captured. Cole, Kano, Sonya and Jax plan to rescue them and defeat Outworld in the upcoming tournament. Cole unlocks his Arcana power and battles Sub-Zero, while Kano battles Goro, and Johnny Cage battles Scorpion. Meanwhile Liu fights Kitana, Sindel and Shang Tsung. Kano injures Goro; Johnny defeats Scorpion. Kitana defeats Mileena and Sindel. Raiden kills Shao Kahn. Cole fights against Bi-Han again and defeats him. Liu prepares to fight Shang Tsung but is stopped by Raiden who reveals that Outworld was already defeated. He explains that when Cole defeated Bi-Han earlier, it changed the timeline so that Outworld lost the Mortal Komat tournament, and Earthrealm was saved. However Bi-Han reappears and engages in a fierce battle against Cole, which ends with Cole emerging victorious as Raiden declares that the dragon mark has passed on to him.
