What is Moliere about? Toggle content

In 17th century France, a struggling young actor named Molière is released from debtor's prison by a wealthy commoner named Monsieur Jourdain, who offers to pay his debts on the condition that Molière teaches him how to act. Jourdain hopes to use his newfound acting skills to win the heart of a beautiful widowed aristocrat named Célimène, but Molière has other plans. As he becomes more entrenched in the Jourdain household, Molière falls in love with Jourdain's neglected wife, Elmire, and proceeds to use his theatrical talents to woo her. Meanwhile, a sub-plot involving the Jourdains' older daughter and a penniless aristocrat named Dorante adds to the hilarity and chaos. As the story unfolds, Molière's experiences inspire him to write some of his most famous plays, including "Tartuffe" and "Le Misanthrope." A romantic and comedy film that explores the life of a young Molière and his journey to becoming one of France's greatest playwrights.
