The film’s characters are suffused with a paradoxical kind of fear that can only happen in a dream.

...an unpredictable visual experience, bracingly experimental for a 68-year-old filmmaker who hasn’t run out of gas.

I found the film’s energy, melancholy, and anarchic vibes refreshing, a 68-year-old master splattering paint over a well-worn genre.

What is Fabian: Going to the Dogs about? Toggle content

In 1930s Berlin, decent, unattached, and unambitious Dr. Jakob Fabian works as a copywriter for a cigarette company during the day. He and his hedonistic best friend, Stephan Labude spend their nights touring Berlin's underground clubs, brothels, and bars in search of pleasure and oblivion. However, Fabian's nihilistic worldview is shaken when he meets Cornelia, a stunning aspiring actress who shares his passion for art and literature. They fall in love, but as Cornelia's career begins to take off, Fabian becomes increasingly disillusioned with Berlin's decadent culture. Fabian loses his job as the economy deteriorates, while Cornelia becomes involved with Makart an older film producer in order to advance her career causing tension in their relationship. Labude gets arrested for his communistic views amidst Germany's growing Nazi Party influence and eventually kills himself. Eventually Cornelia auditions for a movie role and Fabian discovers Labude dead after being missing for a while, just after Fabian finds him at a nude art studio. Cornelia becomes a movie star. At the end of the story, Fabian intends to meet Cornelia at a Berlin cafe before saving a boy from drowning himself in the water. Unfortunately, he ends up drowning in the process. The boy lives, but Fabian dies without ever having the chance to meet Cornelia again.
