After leaving the army, Brian Flanagan (Tom Cruise) pursues a high-powered business job in New York City, but ends up working as a bartender to pay for college. Under the mentorship of an older bartender, Doug Coughlin (Bryan Brown), Brian becomes a charismatic and skilled flair bartender, impressing customers with his flashy style. However, when he meets an independent artist named Jordan Mooney (Elisabeth Shue) while working on Jamaica, their romance causes him to reevaluate his priorities and question his previous ambitions.
