Lord Mountbatten assumes the role of last Viceroy in 1947, tasked with overseeing the dissolution of the British Raj and India's transition to independence. He and his family move into Viceroy's House in Delhi, With him is his daughter Pamela and his strong-willed wife Edwina. The film follows the story of Lord Mountbatten as he tried to mediate between the two major Indian political leaders while being faced with intensifying violence between Muslims and Hindus. He is aided by his newly arrived valet, Jeet who had fallen in love with a Muslim woman named Alia before his arrival. The story unfolds as Mountbatten and his staff race against time to carve out a separate state for Pakistan as violence erupts across India and the few non-Indian troops are spread thin. The film explores how Mountbatten is enraged upon discovering that his Chief of Staff Lord Ismay has been working covertly to draw the boundaries of Pakistan in order to create a buffer state between India and Pakistan. The story also follows Jeet's journey as he continues to pursue Alia despite her being promised to another man, and how he is devastated upon learning that his family has been killed in Punjab. He later resigns his post after an altercation with Mountbatten. The Mountbattens decide to stay in India to assist where they can after Delhi becomes overwhelmed with refugees; Jeet volunteers to help refuges, and Aalia who survived an attack on the night train she boarded after leaving India recognizes him and they get reunited
