What is A Royal Affair about? Toggle content

A Royal Affair is a historical drama film that tells the story of a passionate romance between Princess Caroline Matilda of Great Britain and Johann Friedrich Struensee, the personal physician of King Christian VII of Denmark. Set in the 18th century, the film explores the themes of love, power, and revolution as Caroline and Struensee's relationship blossoms amidst a backdrop of political intrigue and social change. The film begins with Caroline writing a letter to her children, in which she professes to tell them the truth about her life. Through flashbacks, we see Caroline's arrival in Denmark as she prepares to marry Christian VII. However, their marriage is unhappy due to Christian's mental illness and neglect of his royal duties. Meanwhile, Struensee is recruited as the king's personal physician and quickly gains his trust by advocating for progressive reforms in Denmark. As Struensee becomes more influential in court politics, he begins writing speeches for the king that reflect his own liberal views. Several reforms are passed as a result, including the abolition of censorship and torture. However, not everyone is pleased with these changes - especially Queen Dowager Juliana Maria - who becomes suspicious of Struensee's intentions and eventually discovers his affair with Caroline. Despite this betrayal but forgiven by Christian himself., they continue seeing each other behind closed doors while still working on ways to better their country together under an enlightened monarchy inspired by Rousseau’s teachings.. A Royal Affair portrait’s a pivotal moment., one where reason challenged tradition; science challenged superstition; freedom fought against tyranny- all played out against sumptuous palaces & picturesque landscapes that transport us back into another era altogether different from our own!
