Pay the Ghost tells the story of professor Mike Lawford (Nicolas Cage) whose young son Charlie disappears during a Halloween carnival. A year later, Mike and his estranged wife Kristen (Sarah Wayne Callies) are still searching for their son when they begin to experience strange and terrifying events that they believe are connected to Charlie's disappearance. Mike sees his son on a passing bus but when he chases it down, Charlie is not there. He finds a building where homeless people are living and discovers a wall with the phrase "pay the ghost" written on it. The homeless man tells Mike that he needs to leave, but before he does, he is briefly transported to another world where he sees a demonic figure. Later, Kristen sees their son's scooter move on its own and calls Mike. That night during a power outage in their home Mike looks out the window he sees three children being burned at the stake, then turns to see his apartment crowded with figures of children standing lifelessly and pale. The couple call a psychic to investigate who senses nothing but then abruptly walks to the window before being thrown against the wall strangled before collapsing and burn scars form on her hands. An autopsy finds her internal organs were burned into ash. Mike's wife then addresses him in their son's voice pleading for help saying, "She's coming." The film reveals that an ancient evil spirit is behind Charlie's disappearance which rises every year on Halloween to abduct children, starting with the three children that Mike saw being burned alive. Mike and Kristen must risk everything to unravel the mystery and save their son before it's too late
