Mercury Rising is a 1998 American action thriller film directed by Harold Becker and written by Lawrence Block. The movie follows the story of Art Jeffries (played by Bruce Willis), a renegade FBI agent who is tasked with protecting Simon (played by Miko Hughes), a nine-year-old autistic boy who has cracked the government's new "unbreakable" code. The film opens with a bank robbery hostage crisis in South Dakota, where Jeffries is undercover as one of the criminals. While on a routine assignment monitoring phone calls at an FBI listening post in Chicago, Jeffries discovers that Simon's life is in danger and decides to help him escape from National Security Agency agents sent to eliminate him.
