In a dystopian future, a totalitarian regime called Libria has outlawed all forms of art, literature, and music in order to suppress human emotion and maintain peace. The government forces citizens to take a daily injection of "Prozium II" to numb their emotions, and those who refuse are labeled "Sense Offenders" and face death. The city is governed by the Tetragrammaton Council, led by a figure known as "Father," who communicates through giant video screens. The Grammaton Clerics are the elite law enforcement officers trained in the martial art of gun kata and are responsible for raiding homes and executing violators on the spot. John Preston is a high-ranking Cleric who has lost his wife to the regime's strict laws. When he accidentally breaks his morning vial of Prozium II, he begins to experience brief episodes of emotion. He starts to question his role in society and the true nature of his mechanical existence. As he delves deeper into his own emotions, Preston becomes more aware of the world around him and begins to see that life under Libria's rule is not as perfect as it seems. Preston's partner Errol Partridge saves a book of poems by W.B Yeats instead of turning it in for incineration during one raid which leads Preston miles away from home (the Nether), where he finds Partridge reading it with glee despite knowing full well what it entails - being caught would mean immediate execution without trial or mercy but instead choosing feeling because "it was worth paying such price". This encounter sparks something within Preston leading him down an increasingly rebellious path that may eventually put everything at risk when he decides not just play along but actively help overthrow Father & Libria’s oppressive regime by joining up with those fighting against them – specifically an enigmatic resistance group known only as “Underground."
