In a world where mass production dominates, a small group of artisans in northern Japan braves tough conditions to preserve the ancient tradition of saké-making. THE BIRTH OF SAKÉ tells the story of passionate saké-makers and the unwavering dedication required to produce world-class saké at Yoshida Brewery, a 144-year-old family-owned small brewery. The workers, ranging from 20 to 70 years old,s live and work together for six months during the harsh winter, with charismatic veteran master Yamamoto (65) and sixth-generation heir Yasuyuki Yoshida (27) as the tradition's guardians. With fierce competition and the impending retirement of experienced workers, pressure mounts to preserve the quality, tradition, and reputation of Yoshida's sake. As artisans who dedicate their lives to creating this exquisite sake, their personal sacrifices are often significant and unseen.
